The Ionian Islands are very different from the islands in the Aegean Sea. The landscape is with its cypresses, vineyards, olive trees and fragrant lemon trees rather to Italian. The idyllic archipelago owes its reputation to the mild climate, often beautifully colored blue-green sea and the golden sand beaches. Because the average it rains 100 days a year these islands are very green.
Among the Ionian Islands belong Corfu, Paxos, Lefkada, Ithaca, Kefalonia, Zakynthos and Kythira.
In Greece this archipelago also called Eptanisai (Seven Islands). The reason is that the seventh island of Kythira not located in the Ionian Sea.
The islands of Lefkas Ithaki, Kefalonia and Zakynthos Island were once the realm of the Homeric hero Odysseus.
