Kythira is situated near the Peloponnese far removed from the other Ionian Islands. Because of its location the island is also very similar to the Peloponnese. The island has no high mountain ranges, but a hilly landscape with fertile valleys.
The capital of Kythira is Chora (also called Kythira Town) and is located in the southern part of the island. The town is built on a hill with white houses and oddly shaped chimneys. On top of the mountain stands the renovated Venetian castle. From here you have a beautiful view over the city and surrounding area.
Sights on Kythira are, inter alia :
The pebble and sandy beaches of the island are mostly on the east and south. It is not yet a tourist island and is mainly frequented by hikers and people who want some tranquility.
