The Bavarian Forest
The Bavarian Forest is a mountain range with a lenght of 100 kilometers in the German state of Bavaria. The Bavarian Forest runs along the Czech border and is on the Czech side of the Bohemian Forest. The Bavarian Forest lies from above Regensburg to Passau. The highest peak is the Grosser Arber of 1456 meters. Most of the Bavarian Forest has the status of National Park Bayerischer Wald. It is a area where nature and (cultural) landscape are protected and sustainable tourism is promoted. In the winter it is a ski area. The main river is the Regen, which consists of the White Regen and the Black Regen which continue together to flow towards the city Regensburg.
Tier-Freigelände National Park Centre Lussen / National Park Centre Lusen (near Neuschönau) has the following facilities:
* Visitorcenter Hans-Eismann-Huas: opening the 26th of December till the 30Th of April 09:00 - 17:00 / the 1st of May till the 1st week of
November 9:00 - 18:00 / 2nd week of November closed during the 25th of December. Free access.
* 200 acre animal enclosure. There is a 7 kilometer walk along all animals (about 3-4 hours). There are also two shorter variants that reduce
the distance to 3 kilometer with a walking time of about 1½ hours. The animal enclosures are thoughout the year free of charge (day and
night). The trails are very well marked and suitable for strollers and wheelchairs and are cleaned up in the winter.
* A large "natural garden" with more than 700 different species of plants classified in to living area located on a small hill at the
visitorcenter "Hans-Eismann-Haus". All plants are highlighted. The trail is marked and suitable for strollers en wheelchairs.
* Baumwimpfelpad: largest treetop trail. The 1300 meter long pedestrian bridge on wooden poles at a height of 10 to 25 meters and with a
slope of 6% through the forest ends at the platform of an impressive tower with a height of 44 meters. From the tower you have a fantastic
and almost limitless views. The total trail is strollers and wheelchair friendly.
Tier-Freigelände National Park Centre Falkenstein / National Park Centre Falkenstein (near Ludwigsthal) has the following facilities:
* Visitorcenter Haus zur Wildnis: opening the 26th of December till the 31th of May 9:00 - 17:00 / the 1st of April till the 1st of November
9:00-18:00 / the 2nd of November closed during the 25th of December. Free access.
* Animal facilities accessible via a short walk to the visitor center (500 meter / 15 min.). Which goes along the lynx. The long walk to the
visitors center (1500 meter / 45-60 min.) comes along wild horses, cattle and a watchtower and pedestrain bridge at the wolf enclosure.
The animal enclosures are throughout the year free of charge (day and night). The trails are very well markes and suitable for strollers and
wheelchairs.
Approximately 10 kilometers outside Regensburg and 100 meters above the Danube near the town Donaustauf rises an imposing white Greek temple. The Parthenon (Acropolis of Athens) served as a model. Inside the temple are all kinds of bust portraits of prominent Germans from the time of King Ludwig I (1807). The construction of the temple began in 1830 and was finished on the 18th of October 1842. From the temple is a magnificent view of the Danube.
