Thessaly is located between Epirus, Macedonia and Sterea Ellada. The area is divided into four departments: Karditsa, Larissa, Trikala and Magnissia. The capital of Thessaly is Larissa.
This area has the most plains of all areas of Greece. It has a continental climate with cold winters and warm / hot summers. The whole plain is surrounded by high mountain ranges of the Olympus massif (forms the border between Thessaly and Macedonia) with the highest point of Greece of 2,917 meters.
The tourist center is located on Pelion. The Pelion offers various (mountain) villages, whose architecture is unique. - Kalambaka: stunning steep cliffs topped by the famous Meteora monasteries. Some monasteries are still inhabited and to visit.
- Lake Plastiras: way around the artificial lake with beautiful views. Nearby several villages and monasteries.
- Valley of Tempi: a narrow valley with a length of about 10 km. Very famous is the hanging bridge over the river Pinios being visited daily by many tourists.
- Lithochoro: starting point for wonderful walking tour(s) through beautiful natural surroundings or to the top of Olympus ("Seat of the Gods"). The rugged landscape and the snowy peaks of Olympus was in antiquity the ideal living place of the Twelve Gods. Zeus was the head of the gods. The other gods: Hera (goddess of storms), Poseidon (god of the seas), Demeter (goddess of the earth), Athena (goddess of wisdom), Hephaestus (god of metalwork), Ares (god of war), Apollo (sun god and god of music), Artemis (goddess of fertility), Hermes (god of commerce), Dionysus (god of wine and theatre) and Aphrodite (goddess of love).
