Friesland
Friesland is mainly an agricultural province and includes much of the northern Netherlands, and is bordered to the east of Groningen, in the southern of Drenthe and in the south of Overijssel and Flevoland. Through the Afsluitdijk it also borders on North-Holland. The province is located on the Wadden Sea. The Wadden Islands Vlieland, Terschelling, Ameland and Schiermonnikoog belong to Friesland. The capital is Leeuwarden and is located in the north part of the province.
It is a province that distinguishes itself by its own typical culture. The Frisian language is one of the main characteristics of this culture. The landscape is also unique; it has the largest chain of connected inland lakes in Europe and is perfect for water sport enthusiast.
There are many annual water sports events held in Friesland in the summer, of which the Skûtsjesilen championship and Sneekweek are the best known. Another great Frisian tradition is "Fierljeppen", which is Frisian for pole vaulting (across a body of water). Friesland hosts the biggest ice skating event in the world, the Elfstedentocht (Eleven Cities Tour), but only during very severe winters.
A real Frisian drink is the herbal liqueur Beerenburg.
