Flevoland
Flevoland is created on January 1986 and is the youngest province of the Netherlands. The decision to transform the Southern Sea into a lake and reclaim land for food production was taken after a flood in 1916, which resulted in food shortages that couldn't be compensated with imports because of the First World War. The project took half a century to complete and gave densely populated Netherlands enough space for large scale agriculture and modern towns and villages, such as the capital Lelystad
The province is almost entirely below sea level and is almost entirely artificial in character and has large farms, artificial forests and lakes. The former islands of Urk and Schokland (UNESCO) form the higher areas. The province is bordered to the north by Friesland, in the east by Overijssel, Gelderland and Utrecht and to the south by North-Holland.
Bataviawerf has Dutch VOC ships and explains the glorious days of the Dutch India Company. The Nieuw Land Erfgoedmuseum shows you how Flevoland was created.
