Gelderland
Gelderland is the largest province in the Netherlands. It is bordered on the east by Overijssel and Germany, in the south by Limburg and North-Brabant, in the west by South-Holland and Utrecht and Flevoland in the north. All the large rivers of the Netherlands like the Rhine, Meuse, IJssel and Waal flow through this province. The province has numerous characteristic highlights that are worth a visit. Gelderland can be roughly divided into three regions; Betuwe (a area with many fruit orchards) in the south, the Achterhoek (area with castles and country houses) in the east and the Veluwe (lovely nature) in the centre and north.
National Park De Hoge Veluwe is the Netherlands largest national park and is without a doubt the natural highlight of Gelderland. Jump onto one of the free to use bikes ("white bikes") and explorer the breathtaking nature and wildlife. You can also visit the Kröller-Müller Museum with a large collection of Van Gogh and a sculpture exposition in the garden.
In Arnhem is a Dutch Open Air Museum. The museum gives a picture of life in the Netherlands during the last centuries. Living and working in the Dutch are using mostly displaced original buildings such as various types of farms, a number of mills, a Zeeland church and a steam dairy mapped, some buildings are "inhabited" by museum staff as original residents receive visitors .
Also plenty of utensils, crafts and costumes are on display. Artisans also give demonstrations of their skills to the museum audience. Include a miller, a blacksmith, a chair-maker, almost daily, a printer and a paper maker at work. During weekends are often special activities, such as: barrel organ day, harvest rye grain threshing, plowing with horses and an old-fashioned children's carnival.
In the province you will also find a wide range of zoos like Burgers Zoo (Arnhem), Dolfinarium with marine mammals (Hardewijk) and the Apenheul with different kind of monkeys (Apeldoorn).
The town Elburg is one of the oldest cities of the Netherlands with at least 250 monuments. There are walking tours that lead you along the most interesting highlights.
