Macedonia is together with Thrace and Epirus the most northern district of the mainland. Geographically Macedonbia is the largest district of Greece and covers almost the entire northern part. Hence, the area also is so different. It includes vast fertile plains with agriculture, cotton and tobacco, dense mountains with forests, lakes, wetlands, etc. On the northern slopes still life rare wild animals such as wolves and bears.
The largest city and capital of Macedonia is Thessaloniki. Macedonia is divided into 13 departments: Chalkidiki, Drama, Florina, Grevena, Imathia, Kastoria, Kavala, Kilkis, Kozani, Pella, Pieria, Serres and Thessaloniki.
The island of Thassos belongs to Macedonia but is often mentioned in one word with the Aegean Islands so that is why I have posted it on this site under the Aegean Islands.
According to international agreements, this province has only the right to use the name Macedonia.
The former Yugoslav state of Macedonia with Skopje as its capital is officially called Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia (FYROM).
Macedonia is also the birthplace of Alexander the Great and the heart of the ancient Hellenistic empire.
