The Peloponnese is the most southern part of mainland Greece. The Isthmus of Corinth, interrupted by the Corinth Canal, connects the Peloponnese with Attica. Nowadays the Peloponnese in the west (north of Patras) connected to the mainland by the beautiful Rion - Antirion bridge. This bridge was built on the occasion of the Olympic Games in Athens (2004). The bridge is 2,860 meters long and is 160 meters above sea level.
The largest city (also the capital) is the port of Patras. The Peloponnese is extremely mountainous, with the highest mountain Taygetos (2,404 meters). But it has also beautiful flat coastal areas.
Peloponnese is divided into seven departments: Achaia, Argolida, Arkadia, Ilia, Corinthia, Lakonia and Messinia. Each department has its ancient sites, museums etc. to see whether one can enjoy breathtaking nature.
Because of the mountainous surroundings, picturesque villages and beautiful beaches with very clear waters, this area is very popular as a holiday destination.
