The Federal Republic of Germany, known as Germany is a country in Central Europe with a total area of 357.022 km2. Germany borders nine countries: Denmark, The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, Austria, Czech Republic and Poland. It has with its many inhabitants the largest population of any country of the European Union. Since the 70s, millions of immigrant workers from other countries (mostly from Yugoslavia, Greece, Turkey and Italy) came to Germany to work there. The language spoken in Germany is mainly German. This Germanic language closely related to Dutch, English and the Nordic languages. German is also spoken in Austria, Switzerland and other countries bordering Germany, but German has nowhere many speakers as in Germany itself.
The current name of the State, Federal Republic of Germany, dates back to 1949. The capital of the Federal Republic was Bonn. In the eastern occupation zone of Germany, the Communists founded that year with help from the Soviet occupiers a dictatorship called the German Democratic Republic (GDR). The east from the west was closed by the "Iron Curtain". However, the border between West Berlin and East Berlin remained open. After about 3 million Germans (mainly through Berlin) had fled from the GDR to the West, the East German regime built the Berlin Wall in 1961.
In 1989 communism fell in Eastern Europe, with the symbolic culmination of the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989. The opening of the borders between the two Germanies ultimately led to the reunification on 3 October 1990. It cost Germany much effort to unite the two parts of Germany in social and economic terms. Still makes the former East economically less prosperous development than in the West. About one third of the present German territory is formed by the former German Democratic Republci (GDR). The capital and largest city of Germany is Berlin.
Germany territory is divided into 16 states (in German officially called Länder in the form of Bundesländer): Baden-Württemberg / Bavaria (Bayern) / Berlin / Brandenburg / Bremen / Hamburg / Hessen / Mecklenburg-Vorpommern / Niedersachsen / Nordrhein-Westfalen / Rhineland-Pfalz / Saarland / Sachsen / Sachsen-Anhalt / Schleswig Hostein and Thuringen.
The longest distance from north to south is 876 kilometer and from west to east 640 kilometer. The borders of Gernamy has a total length of 3618 kilometer.
Germany consists of three major geographical landscapes: from the north the landscape gradually changes from flat plains through mountain range to the high mountains of the Alps, with the highest point the Zugspitze (2.962 meters).
