Zeeland
Zeeland lies in the watery southwest part of the Netherlands and consists of peninsulas, islands and mainland. The province is in fact one big river delta of the Rhine, Meuse and Scheldt. Zeeland is well known for its fantastic beaches, water sport activities and the Delta Works. The biggest estuaries are the Westerschelde and Oosterschelde. The main mainland is the southern Zeeland, surmounted Walcheren and South Beverland, North Beverland, Tholen and Schouwen-Duiveland. Wrongly is often thought that also includes Goeree-Overflakkee in Zeeland, this islands belongs to South-Holland. The great lakes are Grevelingenmneer and Lake Veere.
The capital and largest city is Middelburg and is located on Walcheren. Other important cities are Vlissingen, Terneuzen, Goes and Zierikzee. Tours through Middelburg, Vlissingen and Zierikzee are very popular. These beautiful cities are home to a few hundred unique monuments. Wander through the old city centre of Zeeland’s historical towns and villages and you might come across a lady in regional costume.
Ask any Dutchman what is typically Zeeuws and he would probably say “boterbabbelaars” a world-famous type of butterscotch. Also the tasty bolussen (sticky sweet cakes) are typical Zeeland sweets. There are of course tasty savoury things too, like oysters, mussels and lobster. Of course it depends on the season, but this seafood is always freshly caught.
