Limburg
The southernmost province of the Netherlands is Limburg. Limburg is elongated in the north-south direction and is bordered to the north by Gelderland, in the east by Germany and in the south and west by Belgium and North Brabant. The north and centre of Limburg are fairly flat, with low hills along the eastern border. The south of Limburg, the hilly part of The Netherlands, with 322 meters high Vaalserberg as highest point.
The largest city and also capital of Limburg called Maastricht. Most highlights of Limburg are located in and around Maastricht. In Maastricht you can visit the Basilica of Saint Servatius, the famous Vrijthof Square which has many monument buildings and outdoor cafes. Events in Maastricht are the Preuvenement (a 4 day culinary event on the Vrijthof square) and TEFAF (important fine art fair). The mostly catholic population in this province talk in their own dialect (Limburgs).
Other attractions in the province are the mines/theme parks and caves of the touristic village Valkenburg, the three countries point between the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, the white village of Thorn, GaiaPark Kerkrade Zoo and the St. Pietersberg Caves.
The most important event of the year is carnival.
A culinary specialty of Limburg is “vlaai”, a pie with a fruit filling. The province is also famous for its many brands of beer, such as Brand, Alfa and Gulpener
