The name Hydra (also called Ydra or Idra) makes its meaning "wetland" because where there is on average more rainfall on this island. Despite of that the elongated island is barren and rocky. This is because in the past, the forests were hijacked for shipbuilding and the little remaining vegetation be eaten by goats.
The island is car free, so the donkey is a popular means of transport. Transportation to various (artificial) beaches happened by taxi boat or kiak.
The capital Hydra is lying on a bay amphitheatre built but does not really have a Greek appearance. The houses are quite stately and high (2 or 3 floors) built and equipped with red tiles.
