Greece has many faces. Most people know Greece from the islands. These islands are all unique and beautiful, but Greece has more to offer than sun, sea and sand. Crete has a rich nature with the Samari gorge, Rhodes has the butterfly valley, Thassos and Corfu are very green, Zakynthos has the Caretta Caretta turtle and around Alonissos swim the rare monk seals. However, the most beautiful nature of Greece can be found on the mainland. Here you can find unspoiled nature, rugged and impressive.
Greece has 10 national parks spread across the mainland and the Greek islands. In addition, many areas have been designated as a Natura 2000 area and thus protected nature reserve. The beaches and the sea in Greece are of a very high quality and therefore Greece knows to various Blue Flag Beaches.
In the extensive forests are lots of trees and plants that are rich in oils and resins and therefore flammable. Huge fires are therefore very frequently and laying much of the (protected) forests to ashes. By intensive logging and fires large areas are affected. In several places there reforestation takes place. Greece is still about one quarter of the forested land through a natural way. Another approximately one quarter of the country is sparsely wooded with small trees and shrubs. The remainder is cultivated or are the barren mountains. The goat you see everywhere in Greece and caused a lot of damage because the goat eats young accretion.
Wild is rarely visible because much has been shot off. In the mountains are deer and wild boar, and in the north are still occasional bears and wolves signalled, they come to Greece from the Balkans.
In addition, living in Greece many animals who love the heat, especially snakes and turtles.
