The elongated island of Evia (Euboea also called) is the second largest island of Greece. The island can be reached from the mainland via several places by ferry or via the bridge that connects the capital Chalkida to the mainland.
The north of the island compared to the rest of the island is mountainous with densely forested mountain slopes (beautiful for hiking). In central Evia is the Dirfis mountain (1,747 m) and the modern capital Chalkida. In the south are several resorts with sandy beaches and the Ochi mountain (1399 m).
The sights on North Evia are, inter alia:
* Ellinika: beach with a small island off the coast showing the small church of Agios Nikolaos.
* Pefki / Asmini / Cape Artemision: elongated flat adjacent beach resorts.
* Istiea: the capital of North Evia with close to the coastal the village Kantadia with salt lake formed by two lagoons (small and large Livari)
* Orei: village with several tavernas. On a square next to the church along the seafront, just past the restaurants, there is the marble image "The bull
of Orei" that dates back to the 4th century BC and was a grave monument.
* Lichada Peninsula: beaches and offshore islets called by the locals the "Seychelles".
* Loutra Edipsou / Aedipsos: nearby is one of the largest resorts in Greece. On many places bubbling containg sulfur medicinal water up. Around
these hot springs several Spa hotels were built.
* Ilia: Monastery of Agios Georigios.
* Limni: cozy coastal town with graceful houses and a picturesque quay with different restaurants. South of Limni you can find the oldest monastery
of Evia, Moni Ag. Nikolaou Galataki.
* Drymona: nice walking path along waterfalls through a beautiful enviroment. Nearby the monastery Osios David.
* Agia Anna / Agali: long beach with a small boulevard with several tavernas.
* Prokopi: many pilgrims come here to the church Agiou Ioannou tou Rosou to worship the remains of the holy Ioannis de Rus.
Sights in the capital Chalkida (also called Chalkis or Halkida) are, inter alia:
* Turkish fortress Karababos built in 1686 with great views
* The Kastro district, the Mosque of Emir Zathe from the Ottoman period and the oldest church of Evia, Agia Paraskevi from the 5th century
* Boulevard with several hotels, cafes and restaurants
* Euripos tide: by the old bridge that the part of the city that lies on the mainland connects to the part of the city that lies on the island shown a
amazing phenomenon in the water. It current changes direction and speed several times a day. The "crazy water of Chalkida".
* Roman aqueduct/ "Kamares"
The sights on South of Evia are, inter alia:
* Karystos: one of the most important places in southern Evia. It is a picturesque traditional seaside resort at the foot of the impressive mountain
Oros Ochi. High on the mountain top is another ruin of the "red castle" (Castello Rosso). Along the boulevard there are several restaurants where
it is very cozy in the evening. Besides the cozy harbor with several colored fishing boats is a small fort (Bourtzi). Nearby Karystos are beautiful
beaches / coves to be found.
* Marmari: a cozy tourist spot with a direct boat connection with Rafina on the mainland. The little Petali-Islands off the coast give Marmari a separate
view. Near Marmari lies the beautiful beach/sandy plateau Chrissi Ammos that is always transformed by the flow in the water.
* Styra: this village is on the narrowest part of the southern part of the island and consists of 2 sections; The higher located village and the port village
Nea Styra which has a direct boat connection with the mainland.
* Drakospitia: there are a number of "Dragon houses / Drakospitia" in the vicinity of Styra. Because of the big stones the Dragon houses must be built
by very strong people (dragons). Architectural, it are is very special houses, by the materials used and the building style. The largest dragon house
is on the top of Ochi Mountain.
* Plastanistos: direction Potami slightly beyond Platanistos is a beautiful 15 meter high waterfall (pre-season) to visit located in a beautiful natural
environment.
A 4x4 terrain car can by useful because of the dirt roads (mainly on the south-east side). Especially because there are beautiful bays to be found here.
