Naxos is the largest island of Cyclades.
The capital Naxos Town (Chora) is wise amphitheatre built on the slopes of a hill. From the port lead narrow steep streets lined with medieval houses up to the top of the Frankish castle.
Through a dam from the city you arrive at the gate of Portara (552 BC.). Situated on the islet of Palatia. It was/is the entrance to an unfinished Temple of Apollo.
Near Apollonia a staircase leads up to the ancient marble quarries and a massive half-finished Kouros statue (6th century). Naxos is still known for its white marble excavated in different slots.
The island is known for the quality of local cheese and honey. A specialty of the island is Kitron, a kind of lemon liqueur.
Across the island are rustic villages, Venetian castles and ancient Byzantine churches. Furthermore, Naxos has beautiful sandy beaches.
